I was educated by Camberwell and the RCA and then taught by some very clever people in advertising agencies. As a student by Dave Trott. As a junior art director at Collett Dickenson Pearce by Alan Waldie. At Lowe & Howard Spink by Tony Kaye, but best of all at Saatchi & Saatchi, by Paul Arden. As an advertising art director, I won numerous awards from the Design & Art Director's Association, New York Art Director's Association, Creative Circle and Campaign Press and Poster Awards. My work was included in '100 Best Posters of the Century' and in many other books and articles on advertising.
I learned how to teach from the great Dave Morris when I was teaching part time on the Media Advertising BA course at Bucks New University. I moved on to teach for 12 years on the BA advertising course at Central St Martins, where my students won nominations and awards, both silver and gold in the D&AD Student Awards, Roses, Cannes Young Creatives, YCN and Adshel Student Design Awards. In 2004 I joined Kingston University as a full time Senior Lecturer on the BA Graphic Design and Graphic Design & Photography courses. From 2005-2011 I organised and curated five experimental Photography shows at the Arden & Anstruther Gallery in Petworth. They featured the work of young designers and photographers on the course at Kingston and pioneered fresh, anarchic thinking as well as powerful imagery. The first two shows, 'Nudes' 2005 and 'Unphotography' 2006, were curated with Paul Arden. After his death I carried on his very exacting standards with the help of Graham Fink, Creative Director of M&C Saatchi, and Toni Arden, the gallery owner and Paul's wife.
I am interested in all forms of communication design, as long as they are rooted in great thinking and truths. I am and always will be, an anarchist at heart.
