Buffy started her career in the theatre, working as an art director for Ralph Koltai and Stefanos Lazaridis, on productions for the Royal Opera House, English National Opera, the Royal Shakespeare Company. She also spent time as a prop maker and model maker for West End theatre productions, including Sweeney Todd, Bugsy Malone, and A Pack of Lies. In 1982 she joined the BBC where she designed a wide variety of programmes, both studio based and on location. These included light entertainment, children's and educational programmes and major dramas.

Buffy is currently Acting Course Director for BA Design Joint Honours and teaches on the MA Production Design for Film and TV.

Along side her teaching, she has designed a number of productions and advertisements, and is a member of Kingston Artists Open Studios where she is a mixed media artist.
