Two of the 12 students selected for Icon Magazine’s best graduate projects on show this year are Kingston University BA(Hons) Product & Furniture Design students.
Sam Lloyd, a 2013 graduate has had his Sand Cast Stool featured (pictured above). The stool tops, made from aluminium are cast in one piece and require a new mould for every cast because the casing is destroyed when the metal part is released. This produced unique stools with surface textures that depict the inconsistencies in the sand and crystallise the stream of molten metal to show its flow lines. Sam worked with sandcasters at the Maybrey Reliance foundry.
James Shaw who graduated from Kingston University 3 years ago and who has just graduated from Design Products at the Royal College of Art is also featured. Making Guns is the second graduate project by James to be featured in Icon Magazine. (his Socket Light and Spun was featured in 2010.)
