intro | process

Process module explores interdisciplinary design processes: the focus is explicitly upon design process and the generation of design ideas rather than the realization of polished outcomes. The spirit of interdisciplinary learning promotes expanded outlook and students are expected to engage with unfamiliar as well familiar practices. It is not expected that every activity will strike a chord, but rather that students are open to new possibility.
Lectures:
Lecture 1 – Monday 31st October 3pm – Paul Micklewaite ’On Sustainability’

’The Book’
As part of the Process Assessment you will be expected to produce a physical publication that communicates and shares your journey, exploration, enquiry and collaboration throughout the Process module. You will need to consider an appropriate format for this.
’The Blog’
As part of the Process module you will be expected to document your idea generation and experiences through Being Human, Publication workshop, Materials Workshop, Critical Design Workshop and iteration. This should be kept as a weekly diary and should reflect your voice and personal design development.

afterthoughts

All the way through this Process module I’ve felt quite unsure about what it is that we’re supposed to be doing. The methods used have all been very different to what I’ve used to, so it has been all about forgetting what I’ve been taught before and then trying to adjust into unlearning or relearning.
Being pushed out of your comfort zone makes you find new solutions, you might come up with something that you never would’ve thought before. It’s been about problem solving and looking at things differently, usually it’s just very easy to repeat the same old and safe routine.  Having an open mind, finding new perspectives and not being afraid of mistakes.
I am still left with mixed feelings about this whole module.  Mainly I’ve felt irritation since it has felt like a waste of time. I do understand what was behind it but during this module I haven’t been able to adapt the processes to my own work.

iterations workshop | day 3

14.12.2011
Almost like Project Runway. Atmosphere was great, everyone was working hard to get ready for the presentation held in the afternoon. Three days of workshop was quite intense and we were pushed out of our comfort zones a little. In the end I was tired but left with a good feeling, having experienced a new process of thinking and designing.

iterations workshop | day 2

13.12.2011
We were divided in three groups – minor, major & unlimited.
Started undoing the fabric, unraveling the threads.
Exchanged techniques with Garfield and started creating more structured shapes with denim. This collaboration helped me a lot by steering me into a new path of trying a more interesting technique in creating shapes. I felt more inspired and excited about what I was doing.

Quite often what you had in mind…
…doesn’t work in realization.

critical design workshop | part 1

7.11.2011

Thinking about fictitious islands. Sci-fi, fantasy, future. Building up amazing islands that have almost no connection to the real world. Then started creating a floating island that is made of all the plastic that has been dumped in the oceans. Netherlands-based Whim Architects have been thinking about something similar, creating an eco-friendly island the size of Hawaii from plastic currently floating in the Pacific Ocean. Considering the melting of glaciers which causes rising of sea levels, such a self sufficient, floating living habitat with its own resources to survive, might be a good solution for living in the future.
