Memory Compilation

Design is traced and captured in our everyday objects that hold our timeline of memories.

Everything around us is designed, whether by chance or for a specific purpose. What cannot be planned is the means by which we interact with these every day objects. From the emotional response we have on seeing our first birthday present from a loved one to all the memories we can gather from seeing a picture of the room we grew up in. How affected are we by these memories and do we all have a timeline which starts with one design and leads us to another?

In contemplating this question, we have brought together a selection of images of everyday objects that to the average audience may seem random and fragmented, but through their personal connections to each owner actually create a narrative of events. Each image evokes a memory or a feeling for the person who took the picture, that can be traced back and captured within that object.

We propose that this emotional layer of design, though often not acknowledged by the designer is in fact seminal to the whole process.  It turns design into a discovery, into a source of inspiration, into an unpredictable concept. It gives old, everyday, unloved objects a memorable past and a forward facing story.

As we collect this timeline of memories, the designer within each of us, whether consciously or not, is inspired by objects we have interacted with. We design according to our experiences and so the process goes on and on in a continuous loop. With this unpredictable element to design the future of the objects we will interact with and add to our memory timeline is an unforeseeable discovery.

here’s a sample of our book cover!

we just need to fix the 1rst ‘o’ in compilation.

we thought that the white cover looks really neat and simple so we tried to have the colored collage underneath it; it gave a nice effect.

Maria, Fatima and I are gonna be in the workshop at 10a.m to cut the final one..please reply if you have any comments..

as for the sentence on the wall, Barry’s gonna check if we can use laser cut letters:)

My text

I wrote them yesterday aswell but I dont know where it went, so here it is + the dates and places.

1- Box.

Age: 8-9 (1998)

Place: Basque Country

My late grandmother did this box for me. She died when I was about eight years old, but I remember an amazing amount of things about her and specially how much I loved her. This box is important for me because she thought about me while painting and engraving it with my initials, MG.

Age: 3 till today

Place: Basque Country

A constant in my life since I could hold one.

3-Micro machines

Age: 8-10 (1998-2000)

Place: Basque Country

They drove me crazy when I was a kid, I used to have a three floor parking building with slides, lifts and car washers, but this one disappeared and now my father collects the cars and adds new ones from time to time.

Age: 0

Place: Basque Country

This cute blue bunny is called Rufus, and is the first friend I had. He heard all kind of stories and secrets (which he kept very well). It was given when my mother gave birth to me by a friend of hers, and it´s still with me.

5-Disney films

Age: 5 (1994)

Place: Basque Country

This movies drove me crazy since I was very little till I was a bit too big for them… I have a whole collection of VHS tapes that I just can´t through away.

6- Cats Mobile.

Age: 0-1 (1989)

Place: Basque Country

My uncle made it for me when I was born and I still have it in my room…

Age: 13 (2003)

Place: Basque Country

I´ve never known how to dance a Whirligig, but we always had them at home since it was one of my mums favourite toys when she was small. I think they have something innocent and pure as toys.

8- Music tapes.

Age: 16 (2006)

Place: Basque Country

My first boyfriend recorded these for me when I was sixteen.

Barry’s annotation

I appologize for my post was one at a time as I was waiting some images from abroad.

Here are my annotations, if you think some of them are irrelevant please let me know.

Age: 14

where: China

Memory: This was the most popular and the highest technology to learn language at that time. the recorder can repeat sentence or words as many times as you set it. The design reminds me more bitter times of learning than the enjoyment from it.

where: Northern small town Xiajialou, China (population about 100)

memory: This is more a story told by my parents to me: when they got married they literally have nothing, everything on the table and the table itself is all we got, we can move by just carrying all our belongings in a basket.

Age: 5

Where: Xiaoqing, China (population about 2000)

Memory: we moved to our new home, life got better, I got my first Barbie doll from my aunt and the digital watch from my passed away grandpa.

Where: Diaobingshan, China(population about 2million)

Memory: worst period in my life so far. High school. Ugly glasses, uniform everyday in school. Hated everyone. It’s really funny now looking back as I don’t have so much unhappy memories though.

Where:Nados, London

Memory: Just an idea of trendy glasses, not that different from my teenage one, no?

Memory: My performing at Shanghai Pride festival, that was the true myself, at the same time I still haven’t found my true self.

Where: London

Memory: Study tripe looks like a holiday as some point.

Memory: My first vintage luxury bad purchase.

Age: 26

Where: Tibet

Memory: collecting item for the sake of memory. Jewery is a good idea for me as I can at least keep it.

Age: 21-27

Where:all around the world

Memory: This bag has been with me travelled in China from north to south, from east to west. Now I carry it to Europe, it has been to Pairs and London. I’m still using it and loving it.
